Metal Ceramic Crowns or Porcelain- Fused- to- Metal Crowns
has been the norm ever since ceramic technology was introduced into the field of dentistry. Charles H Land obtained a patent for his "Jacket Crowns" way back in 1889. As ceramic technology improved so did the bond between metal and porcelain. Although it is not the first choice in situations with high aesthetic demand, (like replacing upper front teeth), Metal ceramic crowns have proven to be highly effective.

Well then, the question all of us would like answered is " how long do they last"? The Longevity of the metal ceramic crown, depends largely upon
  • Skill of the Prosthodontist /Dentist and the Lab
  • Techniques of crown preparation and impression techniques,
  • Method and type of cement used in Cementation of the crown,
  • Determination of correct occlusion among many other factors......
A skilled/ experienced dentist/ prosthodontist could accomplish all these to provide long lasting restorations/crowns. To put a number to the duration though difficult depends mostly on how they are put to use or how they are maintained and taken care of. Also the situation they are used in. for eg. over Root canal treated teeth or as abutments in bridges. Remember there is no substitute for what nature has given us.

Take a look at one such case at our dental practice, South Side Dental Bangalore.
